Panthĕon

Panthĕon (gr., eigentlich Panthēon od. Panthīon), 1) im Alterthum ein allen Göttern gemeinschaftlicher Tempel; ein solches P. stand in Athen, von Hadrian erbaut, u. in Rom (s.d. [a. Geogr.]), welches vom Papste Bonifacius IV. als Kirche der Jungfrau Maria u. alten Märtyrern gewidmet wurde, weshalb es den Namen Sancta Maria ad Martyres od. Sancta Maria della Rotonda heißt; 2) in neuerer Zeit ein berühmten Männern gewidmetes Gebäude, wie das P. in Paris (s.d.), früher u. seit 1853 wieder die Kirche der Sta. Genoveva.
