Lowth (spr. Laußh), 1) William, geb. 1661 in London, war Caplan zu Winchester u. st. 1732; er schr.: Erklärungen zum Jesaias (Lond. 1714), Jeremias (1718), Ezechiel (1723), Daniel u. die kleinen Propheten (1728). 2) Robert, Sohn des Vor., geb. 1711 in Buriton, studirte seit 1730 in Oxford, wurde hier 1741 Professor der Hebräischen Sprache u. 1748 der Dichtkunst, 1755 Bischof von Limerick, 1756 Bischof zu St. David, 1770 zu Oxford u. 1777 zu London, wo er 3. Nov. 1787 starb; er schr.: [553] Prelectiones de sacra poesi Hebraeorum, Lond. 1753 (deutsch von Michaelis, Gött. 1770) u. Englische Sprachlehre, Lond. 1767.
