Poona (spr. Puna), 1) Collectorat der britischen Präsidentschaft Bombay in Ostindien, 250 QM. mit 666,000 meist mahrattischen Ew.; 2) Hauptstadt darin, am Moota, früher Residenz der Peischwas der Mahratten, zählte 1818 noch 110,000 Ew., kam dann in Verfall, hat sich aber unter der britischen Herrschaft, namentlich seit 1840, wieder gehoben u. zählt jetzt wieder 75,170 Ew. Auf Kosten des reichen Parsen Jamsetjce Jijibhoy wurde die Stadt mit Wasserwerken versehen; seit 1821 besteht ein Sanskrit-College, welches an 500 Zöglinge zählt. P. ist eine Hauptstation der britischen Militärmacht in der Präsidentschaft Bombay u. steht mit Bombay durch eine Kunststraße (eine Eisenbahn war 1860 im Bau begriffen) in lebhaftem Verkehr.
