Populonĭa (Populonĭum), Stadt in Etrurien auf dem Vorgebirg Populonĭum, mit Hafen, Eisenschmelzerei u. Thunfischhandel; zu ihrem Gebiet gehörte die Insel Äthalia. In dem Bürgerkrieg zwischen Marius u. Sulla zerstört, wurde sie selbst nicht wieder aufgebaut, sondern nur der Hafen verbessert u. mit Schiffswerften u. Magazinen versehen (j. Porto Baratto). Ruinen der Stadt nördlich von Piombino; vgl. Mazzocchi, Sopra Voltera, P. ed Ilva.
