Prior (v. lat.), 1) der Erstere von Zweien; P. tempŏre, potĭor jure, man muß in Rechtsfällen so schnell als möglich dazu thun; 2) (röm. Ant.), P. hastatus u. P. princeps waren die Centurionen der Hastati u. Principes, welche von den mit dem Rechte der Ernennung der Centurionen bekleideten Kriegstribunen zuerst u. nicht mittelst der zweiten Ernennung erwählt wurden; 3) in Mönchsklöstern der nächste Vorgesetzte nach dem Abte; in solchen, wo kein Abt ist, welcher dessen Stelle vertritt. Priorin, bedeutet dasselbe bei den Nonnen. Das Amt des P-s heißt Priorat; bei den Johanniterrittern war das Priorat ein Provinzialbezirk, welche in mehre Balleien zerfiel. Priorei, 1) das Kloster als Sitz des P-s; 2) die Gesammtheit der demselben untergebenen Klöster.
