Pritchard

Pritchard (spr. Pridschärd), früher Missionär auf Otaheiti u. dann englischer Consul daselbst u. Vertrauter der Königin Pomare; in dem Streite der Königin mit dem König von Frankreich über das von Letzterem prätendirte Protectorat über die Insel regte P. im März 1844 die Otaheiter gegen die Franzosen auf, wurde aber von Letzteren verhaftet u. mehre Tage eingesperrt gehalten, endlich zwar losgelassen, aber von der Insel verwiesen. Die französische Regierung sprach der englischen auf deren Klage deshalb ihr Bedauern aus, u. Dupetit-Thouars, der Commandant der französischen Schiffsstation bei Otaheiti, u. P. wurden von ihren Posten abberufen. Anfang 1845 wurde P. englischer Consul auf den Schifferinseln.
