Pyrrho

Pyrrho, aus Elis, 376–288 v. Chr., Philosoph, war früher Maler u. ging als solcher mit Alexander dem Großen nach Indien, wurde dann Oberpriester in Elis u. erhielt das Bürgerrecht in Athen. Er selbst schrieb nie etwas. Seine Lehre: die Dinge können von den Menschen nach ihrem wirklichen Sein nicht begriffen u. nicht erkannt werden, daher Unzulänglichkeit des menschlichen Wissens; nichts darf man bewundern, so kann man allein weise u. glücklich sein; das sittliche Gefühl muß zur Unempfindlichkeit (Apathie) gebracht werden; das höchste Gut ist die Tugend, mit ihr verglichen ist alles Andere werthlos u. gleichgültig (Adiaphoron).[723] Dieses sein Zweifeln an allen Wissen (Skepsis) gab Veranlassung zu einer neuen philosophischen Schule, der Pyrrhonischen od. Skeptischen, s. u. Skeptiker. Seine Anhänger Pyrrhonier u. daher Pyrrhonismus, so v.w. Skepticismus, Pyrrhonische Wendungen od. Zweifelsgründe, Versuche die Wahrheit als unerkennbar nachzuweisen, bes. durch Aufstellung entgegengesetzter Gründe. Vgl.
