Singapore (spr. Singapur, d.h. Löwenburg), 1) Insel an der Südspitze der hinterindischen Halbinsel Malacca, durch viele Inseln gegen Wind u. Wellen geschützt; 16 QM. mit etwa 90,000 Ew., meist Chinesen; hat wellenförmigen Boden von nur geringer Erhebung, theilweise auch sumpfige Niederungen, trotzdem aber gesundes Klima. Der Boden ist ergiebig; es werden Zucker, Gewürznelken, Muskatnüsse u. Cocospalmen gezogen. Im Jahre 1819 kauften die Briten die Insel vom Fürsten von Dschohur, u. sie bildet gegenwärtig einen District des zur Präsidentschaft Bengalen gehörigen britischen. Gouvernements Malacca; 2) Hauptstadt der Insel, liegt an einer Bucht, hat einen guten Hafen u. ist durch die Erlangung des Rechtes eines Freihafens schnell zu einem sehr bedeutenden Handelsplatz aufgeblüht, dessen Einfuhr im Jahre 1860 schon mehr als 31 Mill. Thlr. u. die Ausfuhr von[127] 411/3 Mill. Thlr. betrug. Eingeführt werden bes. Baumwollenzeuge u. Eisen, ausgeführt Sago, Gambir (Terra japonica), Zinn, Pfeffer, Guttapercha, Felle u. Harz. Die Stadt besteht aus der Malayen-, Chinesen-, Europäerstadt etc., ist theilweise gut gebaut, hat ein chinesisches u. ein malayisches Collegium, einen Botanischen Garten, eine wichtige Missionsanstalt u. hatte 1860 fast 82,000 Ew.; 3) Straße zwischen S. u. dem Festlande.
