Stilpo

Stilpo, griechischer Philosoph aus Megara, um 300 v. Chr., Schüler des Euklides; er hatte früher einen großen Hang zu Ausschweifungen, welchen er jedoch nachmals durch seine Philosophie besiegte. Bei der Eroberung seiner Vaterstadt durch Ptolemäos Soter u. Demetrios Poliorketes verlor er Gattin, Kinder u. Güter. Als Philosoph machte er großes Aufsehen u. zog viele Schüler anderer Philosophen an sich. Der ihm vorgeworfene Atheismus beschränkte sich auf einen Scherz, welchen er auf eine Pallasstatue in Athen gemacht hatte; doch mußte er deshalb die Stadt verlassen. S. starb in hohem Alter; unter seine Schüler gehörte Zeno. Seine neun Dialoge sind verloren gegangen. Er war gewissermassen Vorläufer der Nominalisten, indem er die Geschlechtsbegriffe für bloße Vorstellungen ohne Realität erklärte. Darum bezweifelte er auch die objective Gültigkeit solcher Urtheile, in welchen verschiedene Begriffe mit einander verknüpft sind. Er empfahl durch Lehre u. Leben das Streben nach Unabhängigkeit von äußern Eindrücken u. nach innerer Selbstgenügsamkeit als dem größten Gute.
