Talk, 1) Mineral, bildet undeutliche tafelartige Krystalle, erscheint meist in blätterigen, schuppigen Massen, schieferig als Talkschiefer (s.d.) u. fast dicht; sehr mild u. geschmeidig, fettig anzufühlen, in dünnen Lamellen biegsam; Härte 1, specifisches Gewicht 2,69 bis 2,8; farblos, weiß, ins Grauliche u. Grünliche, apfel- bis spargelgrün, selten olivengrün; fettglänzend bis perlmutterglänzend; durchsichtig bis undurchsichtig, optisch zweiachsig; besteht aus kieselsaurer Magnesia mit etwas Wasser; vor dem Löthrohr leuchtet er stark, blättert sich auf, schmilzt aber nicht; Säuren lösen ihn nicht auf. Er bildet als Talkschiefer größere, im Gneis od. Urthonschiefer eingelagerte Felsmassen, wie im Zillerthal u.a. O. in Tyrol, in Salzburg, am Montblanc, St. Gotthardt, in den Apenninen, am Ural; auch im Serpentin findet sich der T. auf Klüften, Nestern u. Drusen, so bei Waldheim in Sachsen, Mussa in Piemont; in Gneis u.a. Gesteinen vertritt er zuweilen die Stelle des Glimmers. Mit Chlorit, Glimmer u. Asbest gemischt, bildet er den sogenannten Topfstein (s.d.). Wegen der Weichheit u. Geschmeidigkeit wirb der T. als Maschinenschmiere u. als Zusatz zur Schminke benutzt; er dient ferner zum Vorzeichnen auf Tuch (als sogenannte Spanische Kreide), zum Policen von Metall; 2) Blauer T., so v.w. Disthen.
