Tartessus

Tartessus (in der Bibel Tarschisch), im südwestlichen Spanien außer den Säulen des Hercules, nach Einigen eine reiche von den Phönikern gegründete Stadt u. zwar das j. Gades od. Carteja od. Tortosa, nach Andern ein Volk od. Land (Tartessis) an den Ufern des Bätis, welcher auch zuweilen T. genannt wird; auf jeden Fall war T. durch seinen Handel berühmt, s.u. Tarschisch. Im 7. Jahrh. v. Chr. sollten Samier hierher verschlagen worden sein u. große Schätze von da mit heimgebracht haben, u. im 6. Jahrh. herrschte dort der König Arganthonios, zu welchem Griechen aus Phokäa gekommen sein sollen. Vgl. Redslob, Tartessus, Hamb. 1849.
