Vehn

Vehn (holl. veen), 1) in Holland u. Ostfriesland eine eingedämmte u. dadurch u. durch Kanäle trocken gelegte Moor- u. Torfgegend, welche zum Feldbau u. zu Torfgräbereien benutzt wird, weshalb der Kanal meist schiffbar ist. Solcher V-en sind in Ostfriesland jetzt 14, die meisten mit einzelnen Häusern, besetzt; im Ganzen hat Ostfriesland auf solchen V-en über 1000 Häuser u. 5300 Ew. Große Gesellschaften nehmen eine solche Moorvehn in Erbpacht, legen sie trocken u. geben das Land dann in Unterpacht; 2) so v.w. Torfgräberei; daher Vehnland, ein Torflager.
