Wallace

Wallace (spr. Wualläß). 1) William, geb. 1276, stammte aus einer alten, aber armen schottischen Familie, empörte sein Vaterland gegen England, schlug 11. Sept. 1298 den englischen Heerführer Warenne jenseit des Forthflusses u. wurde Regent von Schottland. Darauf siel er in die nördlichen Provinzen Englands ein, wurde aber 22. Juli 1299 bei Falkirk von den Engländern gänzlich geschlagen u. legte sein Amt 1302 nieder. Er lebte nun im Verborgenen, wurde von seinem Freunde, dem Ritter John Menteith, an König Eduard I. verrathen u. 23. Aug. 1305 auf Towerhill bei London hingerichtet, s. Schottland S. 406. W-s Name lebt noch heute in Schottlands Sagen u. Volksliedern fort. Vgl. Sir William W., the Scottish Hero, Lond. 1861.2) Robert, geb. 1773, wurde als erster Vertreter von Greenock in Schottland von 1833–45 viermal ins Parlament gewählt, strebte dort eine Reform des schottischen Gerichtswesens an u. war namentlich thätig bei der Briespostreform Rowland Hill's. 1845 zog er sich ins Privatleben zurück u. erhielt zum Dank für seine Verdienste von sieben Städten Schottlands das Ehrenbürgerrecht, sowie, da seine Vermögensverhältnisse durch fehlgeschlagene Handelsspeculationen zerrüttet waren, von seinen Freunden eine Jahresrente von 500 Pfund Sterling Erst. 1. April 1855.
