Wayland (spr. Uëhländ), Francis, nordamerikanischer Nationalökonom u. Philosoph, geb. 1796 in New York, besuchte das Union-College in Shenectady, studirte anfangs Medicin, dann 1816 Theologie im Theologischen Seminar zu Andover, wurde 1817 Lehrer am Union College, 1821 Pastor an der ersten Baptistenkirche in Boston, 1826 Professor am Union College u. bald darauf Präsident der Brown Universität zu Providence in Rhode Island, welches Amt er bis 1855 bekleidete.
