Wetherell (spr. Uëddherell), Charles, geb. 1770 in Oxford, wurde 1794 in die Advocateninnung des Temple Bar aufgenommen u. bewies sich als geschickter Jurist, bes. wo nach ungeschriebenem Recht (Common law) plaidirt wurde, wurde 1816 King's Counsel u. trat 1817 als Vertheidiger der in den Sporfieldsunruhen angeklagten Radicalen Watson, Preston, Thistlewood u. A. glänzend auf u. klagte bes. das Spioneriesystem der Regierung an. Er kam 1820 für Oxford ins Parlament u. ward 1824 Sollicitor general u. 1826 Attorney general, dankte aber vor dem Ministerium Canning 1827 ab; mit dem Ministerium Wellington trat er wieder als Attorney general ein u. blieb es bis 1829, wo er, als sich das Ministerium für die Katholikenemancipation erklärte, als strenger Protestant sein Amt niederlezte. 1831 bestritt er die Reformbill, verlor aber darüber seinen Parlamentssitz für Oxford u. mußte zu Bristol beschimpft von da verkleidet fliehen, er st. 1846 in Maidenhead.
