Whewell (spr. Uihnell), William, geb. 24. Mai 1794 in Lancaster, bezog 1812 die Universität Cambridge, wo er 1816 promovirte u. 1817 Fellow des Trinity College wurde; 1828 wurde er Professor der Mineralogie, bereiste 1829 Deutschland, wurde nach einer Unterbrechung seiner öffentlichen Thätigkeit vom Jahre 1833 an 1838 Professor der Moralphilosophie u. 1841 zum Master des Trinity College ernannt Als Philosoph ist er ein Gegner der Bacon-Lockeschen Lehre von den Inductionen u. den angeborenen Begriffen u. suchte die Kantische Philosophie in England einzuführen; auch ist er ein Kenner u. Verehrer der Deutschen Literatur.
