Mosasaurus

Mosasaurus (M. Conyb., Maaseidechse), vorweltliche Eidechsengattung, den gewöhnlichen Eidechsen gleichend, aber mit Zahnhöhlen u. zusammengedrücktem Ruderschwanze der Krokodile. Die wenigen Arten des M. bewohnten die Meere der nördlichen Halbkugel während der Ablagerung des Kreidegebirges. Arten: M. Hofmanni Mant., davon 1780 ein fast vollständiger Schädel im Kreidetuffe des Petersberges bei Mastricht entdeckt, der fast 4 Fuß lang war. Aus den Theilen der Wirbelsäule,[475] welche in der Kreide bei Seichem vorkamen, berechnete Cuvier die Gesammtlänge des Thiers auf etwa 25 Fuß, wovon aber der Schwanz allein 10 Fuß einnimmt. M. Maximiliani Goldf., in den Kreidegebilden bei dem Yellowstone u. dem Missouriflusse gefunden, ist wahrscheinlich 24 Fuß lang gewesen, der Schädel mißt 2 F. 1 Zoll, u. von den 157 Wirbeln sind 116 Schwanzwirbel.
