Wittstein, Georg Christoph, geb. 25. Jan. 1810 in Hannöverisch Münden, war anfangs Pharmaceut, 1837–51 Assistent am Pharmaceutischen Institut in München u. zugleich Vorsteher der chemischen Fabrik von Buchner, 1851–53 Lehrer der Chemie, Technologie u. Naturgeschichte an der Kreis-, Landwirthschafts- u. Gewerbeschule in Ansbach, seitdem Privatgelehrter in München, wo er in seinem eigenen Laboratorium chemische Vorlesungen hält; er schr.: Anleitung zur Darstellung u. Prüfung chemischer u. pharmaceutischer Präparate, München 1845, 3. A. ebd. 1857; Etymologisch-chemisches Handwörterbuch, ebd. 1846 f., 2 Bde., dazu drei Ergänzungshefte, ebd. 1849 ff.; Die chemische Nomenclatur, ebd. 1849; Anleitungen zu qualitativenchemischen analytischen Untersuchungen, ebd. 1851; Grundriß der Chemie, ebd. 1852; Widerlegung der chemischen Typenlehre, ebd. 1862; u. gibt seit 1852 die Vierteljahrsschrift für praktische Pharmacie in München heraus.
