Multiplication (v. lat.), 1) Vermehrung; 2) die Rechnungsart des Multiplicirens, s.d.; 3) M. der Winkelmessung (Repetition der Winkelmessung), die in der Astronomie u. Geodäsie öfter nach einander vorgenommene Messung eines u. desselben Verticals- od. Horizontalwinkels mittels des Multiplicationskreises u. Multiplicationstheodoliten, um diesen Winkel unabhängig von den Theilungsfehlern des Instruments zu finden. Indem nämlich ein Fernrohr einmal sich unabhängig in die Ebene des zugehörigen getheilten Kreises drehen läßt, dann aber wieder, nachdem dieser Kreis an einen äußern Kreis durch eine Druckschraube befestigt ist, zugleich mit seiner Kreistheilung sich dreht, kann man bei abwechselndem Öffnen u. Schließen der Druckschraube u. entsprechendem Einstellen auf die erste u. zweite Richtungslinie des Winkels durch eine hinreichende Anzahl von Repetitionen die bei dem Ablesen der Nonien begangenen Fehler bis zu jedem beliebigen Grade der Kleinheit herabbringen.
