Esne

Esne (Esneh), das alte Latopolis, Stadt in Oberägypten (Afrika) am linken Ufer des Nil, ist Hauptstation für die Karawanen nach Darfur u. Sennaar, treibt ansehnlichen Handel, hat Fabrik von Baumwollenstoffen mit Shawls u. berühmte Kameelmärkte; 30,000 Ew. In der Nähe bedeutende Alterthümer, bes. Ruinen von einigen Tempeln, mit mehreren Thierkreisen; bes. imposant ist der noch unversehrte Porticus des Haupttempels, welcher der griechisch-römischen Zeit angehören soll. Merkwürdig sind die Höhlen in den benachbarten Bergen, mit Wandgemälden, welche Geschäfte des Landbaues, der Fischerei, der Jagd, Weinlese etc. darstellen. Belzoni will von hier aus eine Straße durch die Berge nach dem Rothen Meere entdeckt haben. Hier ließ Mehemed Ali 1825 die letzten Reste der Mamluken hinrichten.
