Institution (v. lat. Institutio), 1) Einsetzung, Einrichtung, bes. die politischen Einrichtungen eines Staates, welche die Rechte u. Freiheiten der Staatsbürger der Regierung gegenüber garantiren sollen; 2) Beförderung zu einem Amte od. einer Kirchenpfründe; 3) die wirkliche Verleihung einer Pfründe nach vorgängiger Präsentation, von einem anderen dazu Berechtigten, im Gegensatz zur Collatio im engeren Sinne, s.u. Installation; 4) in der Mehrzahl Institutiones, Belehrungen, Erörterungen, so I. theologiae christianae s. dogmaticae, Lehrbuch der kirchlichen Dogmatik; Institutiones, der erste Theil des Corpus juris, s.d. I. B) a); 5) der Verein, so Institution antipirate, Verein gegen die Seeränber u. Abschaffung der Christensklaven, s. Antipiratische Institution; Smithsonian Institution, s.u. Smithson.
